Forget iPhone Ultra, Apple may actually call it iPhone Duo

Apple’s first foldable iPhone might finally have a name, and it’s not the one everyone was expecting.

A last-minute report from Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman claims Apple plans to call its first folding smartphone the iPhone Duo, rather than the widely rumoured iPhone Ultra. The report arrived just hours before Apple’s September 9 launch event, where the foldable is expected to make its debut.

If confirmed, “Duo” would be a surprisingly fitting choice. Instead of using “Ultra” to simply signal that this is an even more expensive or powerful iPhone, the name immediately hints at what makes the device different: it folds between two distinct forms.

It would also give Apple’s foldable its own identity within an iPhone family already populated by familiar labels such as Pro and Air. That distinction could become increasingly useful if foldables eventually develop into a permanent branch of Apple’s smartphone lineup rather than remaining a single experimental flagship.

Of course, nothing is official until Apple says it on stage. The iPhone Ultra name has circulated extensively in previous reports, so the possibility of a late surprise remains.

But if Apple really does introduce the iPhone Duo, it may be one of those product names that feels obvious the moment you hear it.
