Samsung to allow Gemini access with power button

GEEK DESK

Samsung may finally allow users to launch Google Gemini with a long press of the power button, according to recent findings in the Google app code. This would be a significant change for Samsung devices, which currently only offer the option to launch Bixby or the power off menu with this action.

Most Android devices allow users to launch their default assistant, including Google Assistant or other third-party options, by pressing and holding the power button. However, Samsung phones have traditionally limited this functionality to Bixby, even if another assistant is set as the default.

The latest version of the Google app includes strings of code that suggest Samsung is preparing to add support for launching Gemini with the power button. These strings are specifically targeted at Samsung devices and inform users about the new capability during the setup wizard.

This change is likely to be welcomed by Samsung users who prefer Google Assistant or Gemini over Bixby. It offers greater flexibility and control over how users interact with their preferred AI assistant.

While the exact timing of this update remains unknown, it could potentially arrive with the upcoming One UI 7 release or even debut with the launch of the Samsung Galaxy S25 series.

This development signals a potential shift in Samsung’s approach to AI assistants, opening up the power button functionality to alternatives beyond Bixby. It remains to be seen whether this will extend to other third-party assistants in the future.
