Google Gemini app now fully optimized for iPad with new widget and photo integration

Google has updated its Gemini app for iOS with a long-overdue feature: full iPad optimization. Previously, while the app could be installed on an iPad, it ran in a windowed iPhone layout that left much of the screen real estate unused. As of the latest update, Gemini now takes full advantage of the iPad’s display, delivering a more immersive and practical AI assistant experience on Apple’s larger devices.

The update, released on May 7, also introduces a few notable additions. iPad users can now add a Gemini Home Screen widget, giving them quick access to the assistant’s capabilities without opening the app. Additionally, Google Photos integration allows users to connect their image library to Gemini, enabling more context-aware responses—such as generating captions or surfacing specific memories via image queries.

Gemini’s broader functionality remains consistent across platforms. The app connects with core Google services like Gmail, YouTube, Google Maps, and Search, offering users AI-generated summaries, image creation tools, research help, and idea brainstorming. For those who need more advanced capabilities, Gemini Advanced—which runs on Google’s latest models and supports deeper reasoning and multimodal input—is available through the Google One AI Premium Plan at $19.99/month.

The updated app, now at version 1.2025.1770102, also includes general UI improvements and bug fixes.

While many iPad users have been waiting for Google to bring its AI tools up to par with the tablet’s multitasking potential, this release marks a step toward better productivity and accessibility on Apple’s larger screens. With widget support and photo library access added to the mix, Gemini on iPad now feels much more like a native part of the iOS ecosystem.

The Gemini app is free to download and available now on the App Store for both iPhone and iPad.
