Qualcomm teaser points to two Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 chips

Qualcomm is preparing to reveal its next generation of flagship smartphone silicon in September, and its latest teaser may have answered one question before the company even takes the stage. The upcoming Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 family appears increasingly likely to include two high-end chips rather than a single processor aimed at every premium Android phone.

A teaser for Qualcomm’s Snapdragon Summit briefly shows two Snapdragon 8 Elite-branded chip packages together. Qualcomm has not confirmed their names or specifications, but the image lines up with earlier reports suggesting separate Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 and Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 Pro models.

That distinction could matter more than the branding suggests. Qualcomm has increasingly diversified its premium mobile chip portfolio, giving smartphone manufacturers more room to differentiate devices across price and performance tiers. A dedicated Pro version would push that strategy further, potentially reserving the fastest silicon for increasingly expensive ultra-premium phones.

Leaks have linked the two processors to SM8950 and SM8975 model numbers, with both reportedly destined for TSMC’s N2P manufacturing process. They are also said to share a 2+3+3 CPU configuration. The rumored Pro model could separate itself through a faster GPU and support for LPDDR6 memory.

None of those technical details has been officially confirmed, however, and Qualcomm’s teaser stops well short of establishing that the two chips are Standard and Pro variants. For now, the strongest evidence is simply that Qualcomm wants people looking at two Snapdragon 8 Elite packages ahead of its event.

The story could become more complicated still. Separate reports have suggested Qualcomm is evaluating another chip built using Samsung Foundry’s 2nm process. That processor has been linked to a possible Galaxy-specific Snapdragon variant, potentially continuing the customized silicon arrangement seen in previous Samsung flagship phones. If such a model exists, devices including the future Galaxy S27 Ultra would be obvious candidates, although there is no confirmation of that connection yet.

Early performance claims also deserve caution. An alleged Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 Pro result recently appeared showing substantial CPU and GPU improvements over Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 hardware. AnTuTu later said the result was not present in its official database, making it impossible to treat those numbers as reliable evidence of real-world performance.

More concrete answers should arrive at Snapdragon Summit on September 22. Qualcomm is also expected to discuss the next generation of its Snapdragon X2 Elite laptop platform, making the event important beyond Android smartphones.

The bigger question is not simply how fast Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 will be. Splitting the flagship line could reshape how Android manufacturers position their most expensive phones, particularly if the best GPU, memory support and other features become exclusive to a Pro-tier chip. That could give phone makers more choice, but it may also push the highest level of Snapdragon performance into an even more expensive corner of the market.
