Huawei launches new MatePad Air in UAE starting at AED 2,999

Huawei has launched the latest MatePad Air in the UAE, positioning its 12-inch tablet as a lightweight alternative for users who want a device that can move between entertainment, note-taking and laptop-style productivity. Prices start at AED 2,999, with Airy Blue and White colour options available at launch.

One of the more substantial changes is the display. Huawei has moved the MatePad Air range from LCD to OLED, while the PaperMatte Edition combines a 12-inch OLED panel with the company’s anti-glare surface treatment. It offers a 2.8K resolution, refresh rates of up to 144Hz, claimed peak brightness of 1,200 nits and support for the P3 colour gamut.

The PaperMatte treatment is intended to reduce reflections while providing more resistance under the stylus, giving handwriting and drawing a closer approximation to paper. Huawei says it has also introduced a finer nano-level etching process to address the sparkling effect that can sometimes be visible on matte displays.

Despite the larger screen, portability remains central to the MatePad Air. The tablet measures 5.3mm thick and weighs 509g, putting it firmly in the thin-and-light category. Inside is a 10,100mAh battery, which Huawei rates for up to 16 hours of locally stored HDR video playback. Its 66W SuperCharge Turbo charging can reportedly take the battery to 42 percent in 30 minutes.

Huawei is also making AI a larger part of the MatePad Air’s productivity pitch. WPS AI provides tools for document creation, online collaboration and PDF editing, including the ability to summarise longer documents and extract key information. It can also identify important points in documents and use them to help generate presentations.

Smart Capture expands on that approach with tools for generating outlines, developing topics and drafting or refining text from user instructions. These features place the MatePad Air within the wider industry shift towards adding generative AI directly to productivity software, although their practical value will depend heavily on accuracy and how well they fit into existing workflows.

Huawei Notes has also been updated with additional handwriting and note-taking functionality. The optional HUAWEI M-Pencil Pro and Smart Magnetic Keyboard are key to the company’s PC-like productivity argument, allowing the tablet to operate as a digital notebook, drawing surface or compact workstation depending on the accessories attached.

There are still practical differences between a tablet equipped with a keyboard and a conventional PC, particularly when desktop applications or specialised software are required. For students, frequent travellers and users whose work largely revolves around documents, presentations, PDFs and browser-based tools, however, the combination of a large OLED screen and relatively light chassis could make the MatePad Air an interesting middle ground.

The HUAWEI MatePad Air is now available through Huawei’s UAE online store and retail locations, starting at AED 2,999. Purchases made during the first month include a complimentary one-year WPS AI subscription alongside additional launch gifts.

With OLED now standard and AI features taking a more prominent role, Huawei’s latest MatePad Air is less about reinventing the tablet than narrowing the gap between a portable media device and something capable of handling a working day.
