After lagging behind most of their rivals, Samsung is finally pushing their Android Marshmallow update to its S6 and S6 Edge users, just a few days before the official announcement of the S7 and S7 Edge.
The announcement, which came on Monday, states that the updates will start rolling out immediately, with other Galaxy devices getting the updates gradually. Android Marshmallow brings a host of new features, including a redesigned app drawer, better battery life and more sophisticated Google Now integration to Android. The Marshmallow update, which Google announced in May 2015 and released in October with its own Nexus phones, is the biggest change to the Android OS since October 2014.
Users of the Edge will get some added bonuses as Samsung have expanded the width of the edge panel from 260 pixels to 550 pixels, giving more space for content to be displayed and at a higher resolution. Users will now be able to customize up to nine panels, including the Apps edge and the People edge panels; previously, the feature displayed small photo icons of the user’s top five contacts which linked to contact profiles; now, however, contact names are displayed below the photographs for a more intuitive experience. Furthermore, a shortcut to the settings menu has been included for easier navigation.

Likewise, Apps edge—a panel of one’s most frequently used apps—has also been updated, letting users add ten apps to it instead of the previous five. In addition to single apps, users can add entire folders for maximum smartphone organization.
