The Karma drone is GoPro’s first ever non-camera product. It was supposed to mark a start in the diversification of the company’s products, the majority of which are high tech action cameras, designed to let you capture those special moments of jumping out of aeroplanes or skiing down treacherous slopes. Unfortunately for users of the drone, GoPro has issued a recall to all units.
The Karma drone has only been on the market for 16 days and during that short timespan, GoPro has managed to sell 2,500 units – all of which will be recalled. The reason for the recall may not be as detrimental to users compared to the Samsung Note 7 recall; GoPro says a power loss malfunction is the reason for the recall though it won’t say how many experienced this error.
“Safety is our top priority. A very small number of Karma owners have reported incidents of power failure during operation. We have moved quickly to recall all units of Karma and provide a full refund while we investigate the issue. We are working in close coordination with both the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission and Federal Aviation Administration. We are very sorry to have inconvenienced our customers and we are taking every step to make the return and refund process as easy as possible.”
– Nicholas Woodman, GoPro Founder and CEO.
It’s terrible timing for GoPro; just last week the company announced it missed its quarterly revenue expectations by 23%. GoPro will be providing a full refund.
