Google Photos has seen a lot of updates to its platform thanks to machine learning. Back in September, the service could create themed movies from different pictures you took, all the way from the first picture you took, to the one you took a few minutes ago. For instance, one such themed movie orientated around your children’s growth. And now, machine learning has taken Google Photos a further step, letting you create GIFs from the videos you take.
Upload videos to the app from your desktop or Android/iOS device and the assistant in Photos will get to work on creating short looping GIFs of notable moments from your clips, which you can then share over a plethora of services.
“Now we make animations from your videos, too. And not just any videos. We look for segments that capture activity — a jump into the pool, or even just an adorable smile — and create short animations that are easy to share.”
But GIFs aren’t all that Google Photos got with its update. Photos will now help you rediscover old memories of the people in your most recent photos. For instance, if you meet someone for the first time in a few years and snap a selfie with them, Photos will scan all your pictures for more photos of that certain someone and show you highlights from as far back as a few years ago.
Another feature lets Google Photos show you the highlights of your most recent pictures. If for instance, you’re like me and you snap a couple dozen pictures, Photos may occasionally show you a card displaying what it thinks is the best of those pictures.
And lastly, a really handy feature they’ve implemented lets you find those sideways pictures (a portrait selfie, that for some reason came out landscape and vice-versa) and helps you correctly orientate them.
