After launching audio and video calling for iOS users in October 2023, X, formerly known as Twitter, has finally begun a gradual rollout for Android devices.
This move aligns with the company’s vision to transform X into an “everything” app. However, the full functionality, including placing calls, remains currently limited to premium subscribers who shell out $8 per month or $84 annually. Non-paying users, however, can still receive calls, allowing them to participate in conversations.
X offers an opt-out option as well. Within the app’s settings, under Privacy and Safety > Direct Messages, you’ll find the option to “Enable audio and video calling.” Simply keep it switched off. Additionally, X provides granular control over who can call you by allowing restrictions based on contacts, verified users, and people you follow. This helps avoid unwanted calls, as X calls function entirely independent of phone numbers.
