WhatsApp will discontinue support for older Android devices running Android KitKat or earlier versions starting January 1, 2025. This decision is driven by the need to implement new features and AI functionalities that require more modern hardware.
Affected devices include older models from Samsung, Motorola, HTC, LG, and Sony, such as the Samsung Galaxy S3, Motorola Moto G (1st Gen), and LG Optimus G.
Users of these devices are advised to back up their WhatsApp data to a newer device to avoid losing their media and chat history.
This announcement follows a similar decision by Meta to end support for iPhones running iOS versions older than 15.1, with support for those devices continuing until May 2025.
