WhatsApp takes aim at spam with new auto-blocking feature

WhatsApp is taking a proactive stance against the relentless tide of spam and unwanted messages. The company is currently testing a new feature that automatically blocks messages from unknown accounts that send excessive volumes of messages.

This “Block unknown account messages” feature, currently available to beta users on Android, is designed to help users maintain a clutter-free inbox and protect themselves from potential privacy violations and harmful content.

Unlike a traditional blanket block, this new feature doesn’t block all messages from unknown accounts. Instead, it targets those that cross a certain threshold of message volume within a short timeframe. This allows for legitimate messages from businesses or other unfamiliar contacts to still get through, while effectively curbing the onslaught of spam.

The feature complements WhatsApp’s recent addition of blocking spam directly from the lock screen, giving users even more control over their messaging experience. These steps towards greater privacy and security are a welcome development for many users who have long been frustrated by the platform’s openness to unsolicited messages.

As WhatsApp continues to evolve, it’s clear that striking the right balance between convenience and security will be key.The introduction of auto-blocking for message floods from unknown senders is a positive step in that direction, offering users a greater sense of control over their digital communication.
