USB-C charging comes to e-bikes with the new Ampler Nova and Nova Pro

Charging an electric bike with the same USB-C charger you use for your laptop or phone might sound like a futuristic idea, but Estonia-based Ampler has brought it to reality with the launch of the Nova and Nova Pro e-bikes. These are among the first commercially available electric bikes equipped with a fully integrated USB-C port for charging—no bulky proprietary charger needed.

The Nova series, announced on April 1, isn’t a gimmick. Designed exclusively for European riders, these e-bikes offer practical, eco-friendly transportation with a clever twist: they support USB-C Power Delivery 3.1, which means they can charge from compact laptop chargers capable of delivering up to 140W. With a charger of that caliber, the 48V 336Wh battery can fully recharge in just three hours—impressive for a battery of this size. Many similar e-bikes still rely on slower, bulkier charging systems.

The port is not just for charging the bike. The USB-C input is also bidirectional, allowing you to top off your other USB-C devices at up to 15W in a pinch. That won’t replace your power bank, but it could come in handy during a day-long ride. However, this feature—and the entire bike lineup—is exclusive to the EU, UK, and Switzerland, with no US launch planned.

The Nova and Nova Pro are refined successors to Ampler’s earlier Stout and Stella models, built to work with a wider range of accessories and to simplify maintenance. Both are available in step-through and step-over frame designs, with three size options to suit different riders. The bikes use EU-standard 250W motors with a top speed capped at 25 km/h, aligning with regional e-bike regulations.

The base Nova model is equipped with 27.5-inch tires, a traditional chain and derailleur, and a 9-speed drivetrain. For riders looking for a more premium, lower-maintenance option, the Nova Pro is the standout. It features 28-inch wheels, a Gates Carbon belt drive, and an integrated 10-speed Shimano Deore hub—ideal for commuters who value smooth operation without the mess of chains and oil.

Both models are now available for preorder at €2,990 for the Nova and €3,490 for the Nova Pro, with shipping expected to begin in June. Buyers can also opt for Ampler’s branded 140W charger, priced at €80, though the bikes are compatible with a range of USB-C chargers including those from Apple and IKEA that support the older USB-C PD 3.0 standard.
