Meta’s Threads, the text-focused social network designed as an alternative to X, has officially surpassed the 200 million active user mark. This significant milestone was announced by Instagram head Adam Mosseri on Threads itself, just a day after Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg hinted at the impending achievement during the company’s Q2 2024 earnings call.
Threads’ growth has been nothing short of remarkable. Launched in July 2023, it initially attracted 100 million users within its first five days, becoming the fastest-growing app ever. While growth has slowed since then, it continues at an impressive pace.
This rapid expansion stands in stark contrast to Twitter’s recent struggles. The platform’s decline under Elon Musk’s leadership, which alienated many long-time users, created an opening for Threads to swoop in and offer a more stable and user-friendly alternative.
Zuckerberg has expressed confidence in Threads’ potential, stating last year that it has a “good chance” of reaching over a billion users. During the recent earnings call, he reiterated this sentiment, highlighting the platform’s positive growth trajectory and increasing user engagement.
Despite its success, Threads is still dwarfed by its rival, X (formerly Twitter), which reportedly had over 600 million monthly users in May. However, Meta’s focus on improving the platform’s content recommendation system and introducing new features indicates their determination to further solidify Threads’ position as a major player in the social media landscape.
