Spotify, always eager to stay ahead of the curve, is eyeing a slice of the TikTok pie. According to the Wall Street Journal, they’re developing remixing features that would let paying subscribers play around with their favorite songs. Think speeding things up, mashups, and all kinds of creative twists, then saving them for future jams.
This isn’t just about fun – it’s about those sped-up tracks teens love on TikTok. Apparently, a whopping 38% of songs used on the platform in 2023 were edited! Spotify’s plan seems twofold: give users the tools they crave, and fairly compensate the original artists who often miss out on revenue when their songs get remixed without permission.
The basics might be included in your standard Spotify Premium, while fancier features could be part of a rumored new “Supremium” tier. That’s the one that’s also supposed to finally bring us Spotify HiFi (their much-awaited lossless audio feature).
Let’s be honest, some of those unauthorized TikTok remixes exist to dodge takedowns or get around licensing issues. That’s a loss for artists, and Spotify’s approach offers a potential solution. Not only would remixes be tied to the original recording, but artists could even see a new revenue stream. This is a big deal, especially considering a recent estimate found at least 1% of all songs on streaming services are modified without proper compensation.
Spotify reportedly wants to keep these user-generated remixes within the platform. The smart move here is finding ways to reward artists, not give them the headache of multiple song versions to manage. We’ve already seen savvy artists like SZA release sped-up versions of their own work to capitalize on the trend. Could Spotify be offering a more streamlined way for others to do the same?
