Sonos is planning to take on Apple TV with new streaming box

Sonos is reportedly expanding its horizons beyond speakers and soundbars. The company is developing a premium streaming set-top box, codenamed “Pinewood,” poised to compete with established players like Apple TV and Roku. This move signals Sonos’ ambition to become a more comprehensive home entertainment provider.

The Pinewood device, expected to launch sometime this year, aims to offer a unified streaming experience. It will reportedly run a customized version of Android, with Sonos focusing on creating a user-friendly interface that aggregates content from popular streaming services like Netflix, Max, and Disney Plus. A key feature is said to be universal search, simplifying the process of finding movies and shows across different platforms.

Sonos is also integrating its own voice control system into the device. Similar to Apple’s Siri, Sonos Voice Control will allow users to search for content, make recommendations, and control playback using voice commands.

The Pinewood box is designed to function as an HDMI switch, featuring HDMI ports with passthrough capability. This allows users to connect devices like gaming consoles and soundbars directly to the box. Critically, this design aims to address long-standing latency issues that have plagued Sonos soundbar setups, potentially resolving audio synchronization problems.

For users with Sonos speakers but without a soundbar, the set-top box can facilitate the creation of a surround sound system using other Sonos products. The device will support the latest Wi-Fi 7 standard and include a gigabit Ethernet port for fast and reliable network connectivity.

The anticipated price range for Pinewood is between $200 and $400, positioning it as a premium offering in the streaming device market. This price point puts it in direct competition with devices like the Apple TV 4K, Nvidia Shield, and higher-end Roku models.

This venture into the streaming device arena represents a significant product launch for Sonos. The success of Pinewood will depend heavily on the quality of its software experience. Sonos must deliver a smooth and intuitive interface to compete effectively with established rivals. The relatively high price point could also pose a challenge, as consumers may be hesitant to choose Sonos over more affordable options from competitors.
