Apple’s first foldable iPhone is taking a notably aggressive approach to durability, with the iPhone Duo carrying an IP68 dust and water resistance rating — a specification that could prove more meaningful for a folding phone than it is for a conventional slab-style handset.
The rating puts the iPhone Duo alongside Google’s Pixel 11 Pro Fold while giving it an on-paper advantage over Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold8, which carries an IP48 rating. The important difference is the first digit. An IP6X rating means the device is classified as dust-tight, while Samsung’s IP4X protection is designed to guard against larger solid objects rather than completely prevent dust ingress.
That distinction matters because foldables have considerably more moving parts than conventional smartphones. Hinges, flexible displays and the tiny gaps required to let those components move create additional opportunities for particles to get somewhere they should not. Dust getting into a folding mechanism can potentially become a much bigger problem than a dirty charging port.
Water resistance is similarly strong on paper. Apple rates the iPhone Duo for immersion at depths of up to six metres for as long as 30 minutes. That gives the foldable the same IP68 classification used across other recent iPhones rather than forcing buyers to accept reduced environmental protection simply because the phone bends.
It is an encouraging specification, but IP ratings should not be confused with a guarantee that a phone will survive years of abuse. Apple itself warns that water and dust resistance can deteriorate through normal wear. That caveat becomes particularly relevant with a foldable because its hinge and flexible screen are repeatedly subjected to mechanical movement throughout the device’s life.
Apple appears to have treated physical durability as a central part of the iPhone Duo’s design rather than an afterthought. The phone combines a titanium frame and titanium hinge cover with a folding display built from 10 layers. Those materials and construction choices sound reassuring, but independent durability tests and eventual teardowns will provide a much clearer picture of how effectively Apple has protected the hinge and flexible display in practice.
The IP68 rating nevertheless removes one obvious compromise that early generations of foldables frequently asked buyers to tolerate. Samsung has steadily improved the durability of its Galaxy Z Fold line, while Google has also reached IP68 protection with the Pixel 11 Pro Fold, suggesting that stronger resistance to the elements is becoming an expectation rather than a luxury in premium foldables.
For Apple, that is especially important. The iPhone Duo enters an established category rather than creating one, meaning simply producing a folding iPhone is no longer enough. Matching conventional iPhones for dust and water resistance gives Apple a strong starting point. The bigger test will come after thousands of folds, everyday drops and months of pocket dust — conditions no certification number can fully replicate.
