Apple’s iPhone Duo may grab attention because of its folding display, but several smaller features suggest there is much more going on than simply adding a hinge to an iPhone. From Apple’s first under-display camera to Apple Pencil support and new photography tools, the Duo is shaping up as one of the company’s more distinctive iPhone designs in years.
The camera system is particularly interesting. Apple has placed a camera underneath the folding display for the first time on an iPhone, allowing the large inner screen to remain completely free of a visible camera cutout. It is an important design choice for a device built around giving users a larger, more immersive display when unfolded.
For higher-quality selfies and video calls, users can switch to the Center Stage camera on the external display. Rather than trying to make both cameras serve exactly the same purpose, Apple appears to be using the inner camera for convenience while reserving the more capable front-facing hardware for situations where image quality matters more.
The Duo also gets several camera features designed specifically around its unusual form factor, including Smart Take, Kid Cue and Duo Preview. The Main camera does not have the variable aperture system found on the iPhone 18 Pro, but the foldable design creates photographic possibilities a conventional iPhone cannot replicate. Duo Preview in particular highlights how Apple can use two displays together rather than treating the second screen as merely a larger workspace.
Another notable decision is Apple Pencil support. Apple says compatibility will arrive later this year and work across both the inner and outer displays. Initially, support is limited to the USB-C Apple Pencil rather than Apple Pencil Pro, but even that significantly expands what an iPhone can do.
A folding iPhone that doubles as a compact digital notebook could be useful for handwritten notes, document annotation, sketches and quick edits without requiring an iPad. Apple Pencil support also signals that Apple sees the larger display as more than a consumption screen.
There are other interesting differences. The folding display gets a nano-texture option, while the external screen does not. Camera Control remains present, although the Action button found on other recent iPhones is absent. The Duo is also eSIM-only worldwide, including in China, extending Apple’s gradual move away from physical SIM cards.
The iPhone Duo arrives slightly later than the iPhone 18 Pro, with orders opening October 16 and deliveries beginning October 23. It will ship with iOS 27.1.
These smaller details help explain what Apple is trying to achieve with the Duo. It is not simply an iPhone 18 Pro that folds. Features such as the uninterrupted inner display, dual-screen camera tools and Apple Pencil compatibility give the device its own identity — and could prove just as important as the folding mechanism once people start using it.
