The new Disney+ app starts rolling out across MENA on October 6

We recently reported that Disney+ is preparing to launch a brand-new app for subscribers across the Middle East and North Africa, replacing the existing regional application rather than simply delivering a conventional update.

We now have more details on exactly when that transition will begin.

The new Disney+ app will start rolling out across MENA from the evening of October 6, with availability expanding progressively as the rollout continues. That means the replacement app may not appear for every subscriber at exactly the same time.

Existing Disney+ subscriptions will remain unchanged, and subscribers don’t need to take any action ahead of the rollout. Disney says customers will receive an email when it’s time to download the replacement app and log in.

So, if October 6 arrives and you don’t immediately see the new Disney+ app available to download, there’s no need to worry. The rollout begins that evening and will expand across the region from there.

International streaming is one of the biggest changes

Perhaps the most useful addition for MENA subscribers is expanded access to Disney+ while travelling.

Disney says subscribers will be able to stream the service on the go across Europe, the US and other markets. That’s potentially a major improvement for regional customers who regularly travel between the Middle East, Europe and North America.

There are still some unanswered questions. Disney hasn’t provided a complete list of supported destinations or detailed whether travelling subscribers will continue to see their MENA catalogue or access the Disney+ catalogue available in the country they’re visiting.

Those details could make a significant difference to how useful the feature ultimately proves to be.

New parental controls and Junior Mode

The replacement Disney+ app will also introduce updated parental controls, including a dedicated Junior Mode designed for younger viewers.

Family viewing remains an important part of Disney+, particularly with its extensive Disney and Pixar libraries, so making it easier to separate children’s viewing from general entertainment should be a useful addition for households sharing a subscription.

More Turkish and Korean content is coming

Disney is also putting greater emphasis on international programming with the new app.

The company has specifically highlighted new Turkish and Korean titles coming to the service. That’s particularly relevant in MENA, where Turkish television already has a substantial audience and international dramas increasingly compete alongside Arabic and Western entertainment for viewers’ attention.

It suggests Disney+ is looking beyond its familiar Hollywood franchises as it continues developing the service for regional audiences.

Disney+ recommendations are getting smarter

Content discovery is another area getting an upgrade.

Disney says recommendations will become smarter as subscribers continue watching, allowing the service to learn more about individual viewing preferences over time.

The real test will be how effectively that system understands MENA viewing habits. Recommendations that recognise interest across Arabic, Turkish, Korean and Western programming could make discovery considerably more useful than simply surfacing Disney’s biggest global franchises.

What we still don’t know

Disney hasn’t yet detailed whether the replacement MENA app will introduce major changes to the overall interface, offline downloads, streaming quality or device support.

Those elements could ultimately have a bigger impact on everyday use than some of the features already announced.

What we do know is that the transition begins on the evening of October 6, with the new Disney+ app becoming available progressively across MENA.

Subscribers should keep an eye on their inbox, as Disney will email customers when it’s time to download the replacement application and log in.

For MENA users — particularly frequent travellers and viewers looking for a broader mix of international programming — the new app has the potential to be a meaningful upgrade. We’ll get a much better idea of just how substantial the changes are once the rollout begins on October 6.
