Sonos expands audio swap feature to more soundbars, addresses user concerns with app update

Sonos has rolled out a significant update for its Sonos Ace headphones, expanding their compatibility to all Sonos soundbars. This means users can now enjoy the convenient “TV audio swap” feature, which seamlessly transfers audio from the soundbar to the headphones, on models like the Sonos Ray and Sonos Beam, in addition to the previously supported Sonos Arc. This enhancement is available for both Android and iOS users.

This update is particularly notable as it comes after a summer of challenges for Sonos, following a major app revamp that led to user frustrations due to missing and malfunctioning features. In response to the backlash, Sonos CEO Patrick Spence issued an apology and the company has been actively working to address these issues.

The latest Sonos app update not only brings the expanded audio swap functionality but also includes several other improvements:

  • Tool to downgrade S2 systems to S1
  • Smoother group volume controls with reduced latency
  • Mute buttons for individual speakers in a group
  • Group volume controls accessible from the now-playing screen
  • Ability to clear the queue
  • Enhanced performance for large queues
  • Improved reliability for speech enhancement and night mode

This comprehensive update, released just before Sonos announces its second-quarter 2024 earnings, demonstrates the company’s commitment to refining its products and regaining user trust. By addressing previous issues and expanding headphone compatibility, Sonos is taking significant steps to improve the overall user experience.
