Sonos CEO acknowledges app issues, delays product launches to prioritize user experience

Sonos CEO Patrick Spence announced during the company’s third-quarter earnings call that two upcoming product releases have been postponed. This decision comes as Sonos prioritizes resolving significant issues within its ecosystem, stemming from a problematic May app update.

Spence acknowledged the negative impact the app situation has had on existing product sales, emphasizing the company’s commitment to addressing the problems and restoring customer satisfaction before launching new products. While he didn’t specify which products were delayed, it’s speculated that they may include a new speaker and potentially an update to the Sonos Arc soundbar.

Spence also shed light on the reasons behind the system overhaul that led to these issues. He explained that the company invested $20-30 million to tackle the short-term challenges and ensure a return to positive customer experiences. The system rebuild was necessary to prepare for future innovations and new product categories that the previous system couldn’t support.

While acknowledging the setbacks caused by the app update, Spence reiterated the importance of the redesign for long-term growth. He took responsibility for the execution issues, admitting that his “push for speed backfired.” Despite the challenges, Spence expressed confidence in Sonos’ ability to overcome these obstacles and continue delivering innovative products and services in the future.
