Reddit CEO hints at AI-powered search and potential paywalled communities

Reddit CEO Steve Huffman, during the company’s second earnings call since going public, revealed plans to experiment with AI-powered search and explore the possibility of paywalled subreddits.

Huffman stated that Reddit would begin testing AI-enhanced search results later this year. This new feature aims to summarize and recommend content, helping users delve deeper into various topics and discover new communities on the platform. While the exact timeline for these tests remains unclear, Huffman confirmed that both first-party and third-party AI models would be utilized.

This move signifies a significant shift for Reddit’s search functionality, which has remained largely unchanged for a considerable period. Huffman believes that this innovation could attract new users and potentially become a substantial source of advertising revenue.

In addition to AI-powered search, Huffman hinted at the possibility of introducing paywalled subreddits as a means to monetize new features. While emphasizing that the free version of Reddit would continue to exist and thrive, he suggested that this new approach could unlock novel use cases and types of subreddits with exclusive content or private areas.

These announcements come as Reddit actively seeks to expand its business model beyond advertising. The company has recently secured lucrative licensing deals with Google and OpenAI and has taken measures to block search engines that do not pay for access to Reddit’s content.

While a Reddit spokesperson declined to provide further details on Huffman’s remarks, the company’s pursuit of new revenue streams aligns with its broader strategy since going public earlier this year. The potential introduction of AI-powered search and paywalled communities marks a significant evolution for Reddit, offering new opportunities for both users and the platform itself.
