Qualcomm, Google, Samsung collaborate on new smart glasses

The quest for practical, wearable computers has seen many contenders—Google Glass, Magic Leap, Oculus Rift, to name a few. None, however, have truly revolutionized how we interact with technology. Now, Qualcomm CEO Cristiano Amon suggests that major tech players haven’t abandoned this pursuit. He reveals a collaboration with Samsung and Google on new “mixed reality” smart glasses, which aim to blend digital information with the real world.

This approach contrasts with virtual reality headsets that immerse users in entirely digital environments. Amon envisions these smart glasses as accessories to your phone, not standalone devices like Apple’s Vision Pro or Meta’s Quest. The goal, he states, is to make smart glasses so appealing that “everyone that has a phone” will want a pair.

While the concept is intriguing, the path to success is challenging. Smart glasses need to be lightweight and comfortable for all-day wear, while also packing enough power and battery life to deliver meaningful experiences. Meta’s Ray-Ban smart glasses, which offer basic functions like music playback and photography, highlight the difficulty of striking this balance.

Amon believes AI will be crucial to these smart glasses, and Google’s expertise in AI and Android development is a significant asset. Samsung, as the largest Android phone manufacturer and a leader in display technology, brings essential hardware capabilities to the table. Qualcomm, with its energy-efficient Snapdragon AR2 Gen 1 chipset, will likely power the device.

While neither Google nor Samsung has officially confirmed this collaboration, Samsung has hinted at a new mixed reality platform in the works. Whether this partnership will result in a groundbreaking product or fizzle out remains to be seen. However, with the combined expertise of these tech giants, the potential for success is certainly there.

The vision of smart glasses becoming as ubiquitous as smartphones is ambitious, but it speaks to the continued pursuit of merging the digital and physical worlds. Perhaps this collaboration will be the one to finally deliver on that promise.
