OpenAI makes AI more accessible with phone and WhatsApp features

OpenAI has launched a new feature that allows users to interact with ChatGPT through phone calls and WhatsApp messages. By dialing 1-800-CHATGPT or messaging +1-800-242-8478 on WhatsApp, users can engage in conversations with the AI chatbot.

This initiative aims to make AI more accessible to a wider audience, particularly those who may be less familiar with web-based interfaces. The phone and WhatsApp features provide a user-friendly way to experience ChatGPT’s capabilities.

The phone service is currently limited to 15 minutes per phone number per month in the US. However, users can utilize multiple phone numbers to extend their interaction time. The WhatsApp feature is powered by GPT-4o mini, offering a streamlined version of the chatbot.

OpenAI emphasizes that this feature is intended as an introductory experience for newcomers to AI. Existing users seeking more advanced features and personalization options are encouraged to continue using the web-based ChatGPT interface.

OpenAI has clarified that the phone calls and WhatsApp messages will not be used to train its large language models, addressing potential privacy concerns.
