While HMD has not released an official statement, all Nokia smartphones are now listed as “unavailable” on the site and have been moved to a separate section away from HMD’s own branded devices.
This move comes after years of rumors about Nokia’s potential departure from the smartphone arena. Despite a nostalgic resurgence in 2017 when HMD acquired the rights to produce Nokia-branded phones, the company has struggled to compete in the increasingly crowded market.
Although Nokia smartphones seem to have reached the end of the line, the brand’s feature phones remain available on the HMD website. These basic phones, often referred to as “dumb phones,” continue to have a niche following.
Nokia, as a company, is involved in a wide range of technology sectors beyond just mobile phones. The company is actively engaged in telecommunications infrastructure, network development, and even space exploration projects. A potential exit from the smartphone market could allow Nokia to redirect resources towards these other endeavors.
