Nintendo has officially announced the release date for its long-anticipated next-generation console. The Nintendo Switch 2 will hit store shelves on June 5, 2025, with a starting price of $449.99. The system introduces upgraded hardware, enhanced online features, and a deep library of games spanning new exclusives and existing titles from the original Switch catalog.
One of the key highlights of the Switch 2 is its revamped controller design. The new Joy-Con 2 controllers magnetically attach to the console and offer added functionality, including mouse-like control. Players can slide the controllers across surfaces to aim or interact in compatible games. These controllers also come with a built-in C Button used to initiate the system’s new voice and video chat system called GameChat.

GameChat is designed to bring more social interactivity to online multiplayer gaming. Up to 12 players can voice chat, while four can share their screens during gameplay. An optional USB-C camera accessory enables video chat, and for a limited period ending March 2026, GameChat will be available without requiring a Nintendo Switch Online membership.

The hardware also receives a noticeable upgrade. The Switch 2 sports a 7.9-inch Full HD LCD display, offering more vibrant visuals and improved clarity compared to its predecessor. Internally, the system includes an upgraded CPU and GPU, delivering better frame rates, reduced loading times, and support for 4K resolution through the dock. In handheld or tabletop mode, users will also benefit from spatial 3D audio, adding to the immersive experience.

Storage has been significantly expanded, with the console offering 256GB of internal storage — a major step up from the original model. Users can further expand storage using microSD Express cards, which offer faster read and write speeds than older microSD formats.

Backward compatibility remains a strong focus. Most existing Nintendo Switch physical and digital games will be playable on the new hardware. Accessories like the original Joy-Con controllers and the Nintendo Switch Pro Controller will also function with the new console. Meanwhile, the Nintendo Switch 2 Dock will allow supported titles to run at up to 4K and 120 fps on compatible displays.
Another notable feature is GameShare. This new function allows users to share digital games with others, even if the recipient hasn’t purchased the game themselves. Virtual game cards track ownership and make sharing or borrowing across family accounts easier. These digital licenses can also be played offline once downloaded and can be accessed by multiple users on a shared device.
At launch, a broad lineup of titles will showcase the system’s new capabilities. The console will debut with a bundle that includes Mario Kart World, featuring an expansive world map and a new Knockout Tour mode. On July 17, Donkey Kong Bananza will arrive as a new 3D platformer exclusive to the system, promising destructible environments and unique exploration mechanics.
Other notable launch titles include updated versions of The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, Tears of the Kingdom, and Kirby and the Forgotten Land with performance enhancements and additional content.
Third-party support is also robust. Players can expect titles such as Cyberpunk 2077: Ultimate Edition, Hogwarts Legacy, Street Fighter 6, and Final Fantasy VII Remake Intergrade to be available on launch day or shortly after. FromSoftware’s The Duskbloods will be a Nintendo Switch 2 exclusive, arriving in 2026. Meanwhile, games like SPLIT FICTION, Elden Ring: Tarnished Edition, and Borderlands 4 are already confirmed for future release.
On the classics side, Nintendo will introduce GameCube titles through the Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack. Games such as F-Zero GX and The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker will be accessible in updated resolution, along with a retro-styled wireless controller modeled after the original GameCube design.
Parental control and accessibility haven’t been overlooked. The Nintendo Switch 2 offers expanded settings including text-to-speech, adjustable font sizes, and easier-to-manage family controls. The Nintendo Switch Parental Controls app will continue to provide options for monitoring and limiting gameplay, and is now tied into managing GameChat permissions for players under 16.
Pre-orders for the Nintendo Switch 2 begin April 9, 2025, in the US. With upgraded specs, forward-thinking features, and an expanding list of launch and upcoming titles, the Switch 2 is shaping up to be a versatile successor that balances new capabilities with support for the existing Nintendo ecosystem. Whether you’re looking for new multiplayer experiences or revisiting classic games in higher fidelity, the Switch 2 aims to deliver both portability and performance in one package.
