The Apple Magic Mouse, a staple accessory in the Apple ecosystem since 2009, may finally be getting a long-awaited redesign. According to a recent report by Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, Apple’s design team is actively exploring new prototypes for the Magic Mouse, aiming to create a more contemporary and functional design.
While details about the potential redesign remain scarce, Gurman suggests that Apple is seeking to create a mouse that is better suited to the evolving landscape of computing, which increasingly incorporates touch screens and voice commands.
One of the most common criticisms of the current Magic Mouse is its ergonomics. Despite numerous complaints, the Magic Mouse has retained its original form factor, which some users find uncomfortable for extended use. It is hoped that a redesign will address these concerns and prioritize user comfort.
Another area for potential improvement is the charging system. While the transition to a rechargeable battery was a welcome upgrade, the current design places the charging port on the underside of the mouse, rendering it unusable while charging. A redesigned Magic Mouse could incorporate a larger battery and relocate the charging port to a more convenient position.
Aside from the switch to a USB-C port, the Magic Mouse has seen minimal updates in recent years. A redesigned model with improved ergonomics and battery life would be a welcome addition to the Apple accessory lineup.
While a specific release date for the new Magic Mouse remains uncertain, Gurman suggests that it may be 12 to 18 months before it hits the market.
