Honor trolls Samsung, flaunting thinnest foldable phone ahead of global launch

In the ongoing foldable phone wars, Honor is taking a jab at Samsung. As the company prepares to introduce its remarkably slim Magic V3 to the global market, it’s not missing a chance to highlight its engineering triumph over Samsung’s latest foldable, the Galaxy Z Fold 6.

Honor’s marketing team seized on consumer research revealing that price and size remain the biggest hurdles to foldable phone adoption. Enter the Honor Magic V3, a device so thin and light it practically defies expectations. At a mere 9.2mm thick when closed and weighing a featherlight 226g, it comfortably outshines the Galaxy Z Fold 6, which, even after Samsung’s efforts to slim it down, is still a comparatively chunky 12.1mm.

Innovation Behind the Magic V3

So, how did Honor achieve this engineering feat? The Magic V3 incorporates a range of innovative materials and design choices.

The phone’s back cover is made of a custom material stronger than Kevlar, while its hinge employs a next-gen Honor Super Steel with impressive tensile strength. This allows for a hinge that’s a record-breaking 2.84mm wide, leaving more space for structural reinforcements and further slimming down the device. The Magic V3 even boasts an impact-resistant silicone gel material and a new type of thin armored glass to protect its main display, proving its durability despite its delicate appearance.

Internal components have also been miniaturized, including a slimmer battery and the industry’s thinnest vapor chamber. All of these advancements have resulted in a foldable phone that’s just 4.5mm thick when unfolded, yet still manages to pass an IPX8 water resistance test – a first for foldables.

Samsung’s “Slim” Struggle

While Honor basks in its accomplishment, Samsung is reportedly still grappling with the challenges of creating a thinner, more affordable foldable, tentatively dubbed the Z Fold Slim. Rumors suggest Samsung has had to make compromises to achieve a slimmer profile, including ditching the S Pen support and potentially sacrificing some durability.

Despite these challenges, Samsung seems determined to release the Z Fold Slim in October. However, it remains to be seen how a cheaper and thinner Z Fold will fare against the likes of the Magic V3, especially considering the compromises made to achieve its slimness.

Honor’s confident trolling of Samsung underscores the intensifying competition in the foldable phone arena. With Chinese brands pushing the boundaries of design and technology, Samsung faces an uphill battle to maintain its leadership position. The Magic V3’s global launch will undoubtedly be a significant moment in this ongoing rivalry.
