HMD might ditch the Nokia branding in its next smartphone release

A leaked image appears to offer a glimpse of HMD Global’s first smartphone under its own brand, marking a potential shift for the company previously known for its Nokia-branded devices.

The leaked image published by 91mobiles, reportedly showcasing a model numbered N159V, reveals a flat display with a central selfie camera and a matte black rear panel housing two cameras. The material could be plastic, suggesting a potential focus on the budget or mid-range market. While further details like specifications remain unknown, the presence of HMD’s logo on the back distinguishes it from Nokia offerings.

This development aligns with HMD CEO’s announcement in September 2023 of the company’s plans for its own smartphone brand. Last November, two HMD-branded phones (N159V and TA-1585) appeared on a database, possibly hinting at regional variations of the same device.

Market launch predictions include April 2024, with India reportedly among the first recipients. Rumors also suggest availability in the U.S. according to leaker Evan Blass.

While specifics remain limited, the leak underscores HMD’s potential move beyond Nokia branding and suggests the upcoming phone could be the company’s first solo venture in the smartphone market.
