Grok AI breaks free from X, now available as a standalone app

Grok, the AI assistant previously exclusive to the social media platform X, is now available as a standalone app on the US App Store. This move allows users to experience Grok’s capabilities without needing to navigate the X platform.

The Grok app offers a similar range of features to its X counterpart, including image generation, text summarization, and question answering. It retains the conversational and engaging tone that xAI, the developer behind Grok, has emphasized.

Grok was initially offered as a perk for X Premium subscribers, but a free tier was introduced in December 2024, granting access to a wider audience. The free tier comes with certain limitations, such as a cap on the number of requests allowed within a specific timeframe. It remains to be seen whether these limitations will also apply to the standalone Grok app.

Users can access the Grok app without signing in or can choose to sign in with various accounts, including Apple, X, Google, or email. Whether an X Premium subscription provides additional benefits within the Grok app, similar to the perks on the X platform, is currently unclear.

Grok, like other AI assistants, has faced challenges related to accuracy and occasional unexpected outputs, particularly in image generation. However, xAI has positioned Grok as being more open to answering questions that other AI assistants might avoid, and a version of the Grok AI model is open source, potentially fostering further development and customization.

The Grok app offers a convenient way to explore the capabilities of this AI assistant without requiring users to engage with the X platform. Whether it lives up to its billing as a more open and engaging AI remains to be seen, but its availability as a standalone app certainly lowers the barrier to entry for those curious to try it out.
