Roblox wants to become the platform behind your next game

Roblox is making a bigger play for developers who want to build businesses rather than simply publish another experience inside its platform. At its 2026 Roblox Developers Conference, the company unveiled standalone apps, browser-based play, expanded AI creation tools and new ways for creators to access their earnings.

One of the most significant changes is the ability for creators to turn Roblox experiences into standalone apps for mobile devices, PCs and consoles. Roblox will continue providing the underlying technology and services, but developers will have another way to distribute their work outside the traditional Roblox experience.

That potentially changes the relationship between Roblox and its most successful creators. The platform has spent years building an enormous ecosystem of user-generated games, but allowing projects to operate as standalone apps gives developers more flexibility over how their work reaches players while keeping them tied to Roblox’s infrastructure.

Discovery is also getting easier. Roblox plans to introduce browser-based play before the end of 2026, allowing someone to follow a shared link and enter an experience without the usual friction between finding a game and launching it. Creators will additionally be able to combine online and offline gameplay, while new engine features including an orthographic camera, animated image containers and sprite-sheet imports will improve support for 2D games.

AI is becoming a larger part of the creation process too. Roblox’s Build feature, which allows users to create and publish games using prompts, is expanding its public alpha to Serbia and Singapore. Roblox is adding an asset library, desktop access and more iterative controls, while a Scene Generator scheduled for later this year will bring prompt-generated environments to Build and Roblox Studio.

NPCs are getting additional capabilities as well, including the ability to playtest experiences. That could be particularly useful for smaller development teams, although AI-assisted testing is unlikely to eliminate the need for actual players when developers need to understand balance, usability and unpredictable human behaviour.

Roblox is also addressing the business side of its creator economy. Roblox Wallet will allow eligible creators to receive earnings in real currency, with automatic business-day payments and transfers to external accounts or other Roblox accounts. A related Roblox Card is planned for 2027, effectively giving creators a debit card connected to their available Wallet balance.

The announcements arrive while Roblox continues to face scrutiny around child safety, an issue these creator-focused updates don’t directly address. At the same time, the scale of the platform remains difficult to ignore: Roblox says users spent 29 billion hours across its experiences during the most recent quarter, spanning more than 180 countries.

Taken together, the RDC announcements suggest Roblox increasingly wants to be viewed as development infrastructure rather than merely a destination for user-generated games. Standalone distribution could be the most consequential part of that shift, particularly if successful Roblox creators begin treating the platform as the technology underneath their games rather than the place those games have to live.
