This ridiculously geeky Spigen iPhone Duo case needs to become real

Apple’s iPhone Duo might be all about the future, but Spigen wants to send it straight back to 1999 — preferably while blasting dial-up noises and waiting for Napster to finish downloading a single MP3.

The accessory maker has revealed a wonderfully nerdy iPhone Duo case concept inspired by Apple’s original iBook G3, the gloriously chunky clamshell laptop that helped make translucent plastic and ridiculously cheerful colours cool. Spigen’s design borrows that unmistakable aesthetic, pairing a white shell with Blueberry, Tangerine and Key Lime-style colours.

And weirdly, it works.

Apple’s folding iPhone already has the basic silhouette of a miniature laptop when closed, so turning it into a pocket-sized tribute to the iBook feels almost suspiciously obvious in hindsight. Instead of pretending the Duo’s hinge doesn’t exist, Spigen makes the clamshell shape part of the joke.

Unfortunately, there’s a boss battle between us and actually buying one: it doesn’t exist yet.

Spigen says the iBook Duo is only a concept for now, although the company has very deliberately left the door open to producing it. In other words, this appears to be one of those “make enough noise and maybe we’ll manufacture it” situations.

There’s no guarantee that will happen. Spigen has played with Apple nostalgia before, including a beige “1984” MacBook case concept revealed earlier in 2026. That design referenced early Macintosh hardware with details including a floppy-drive-inspired element and Apple’s classic handwritten “hello” motif. Months later, it still hasn’t become a product.

The iPhone Duo concept feels like a better fit, though. Foldables are inherently awkward things to protect: cases need to accommodate hinges and moving panels without transforming an expensive phone into an expensive brick. Spigen’s idea embraces that bulk rather than apologising for it.

It also taps into something accessory makers understand very well: geeks love retro Apple. The translucent plastics and candy colours of late-’90s Apple hardware remain instantly recognisable decades later, especially in a market where most premium phones still arrive dressed like serious little slabs of glass and metal.

Whether Spigen actually makes the iBook Duo remains to be seen. But if we’re going to wrap Apple’s futuristic foldable in plastic anyway, turning it into a tiny 1999 iBook sounds considerably more fun than buying yet another black case.
