OpenAI is expanding ChatGPT Sites with a collection of features aimed at turning its AI website builder from a quick solo prototyping tool into something teams could realistically use for shared projects.
The biggest addition is Build Together, a collaboration feature that allows multiple people to work on the same ChatGPT Site. Invited users can edit the project, save their changes and publish updates rather than funneling every revision through the person who originally created it.
That may sound like a relatively straightforward upgrade, but collaboration is an important piece of the puzzle for AI-generated websites. Generating a functional site from a prompt is useful for quickly testing an idea, but real projects rarely remain one-person affairs. Marketing teams, developers, designers and clients all tend to become involved eventually, making shared editing considerably more useful than simply generating another prototype.
OpenAI is also adding more control over who can see those projects. ChatGPT Sites can now remain private while access is granted to selected people. That opens the door to internal dashboards, work tools, unfinished client projects and prototypes that aren’t ready to be publicly accessible.
The development process should be quicker as well. OpenAI says it has reduced the time between prompting ChatGPT and deploying a Site by roughly 50%. The practical benefit will depend on the complexity of individual projects, but shorter deployment cycles could make iterative development less frustrating when users are repeatedly generating and testing changes.
Another notable addition gives ChatGPT greater visibility into the data behind a Site. The AI can inspect a connected Site database, while collaborators can also view the stored information. For lightweight applications that collect or manage data, this could make troubleshooting and checking database contents more accessible without requiring users to jump between as many separate tools.
Custom domain support rounds out the update. Site owners can connect their own domain rather than relying exclusively on the default address provided by the platform. That’s an essential feature if ChatGPT Sites is expected to move beyond experiments and become a viable option for customer-facing projects, portfolios or business tools.
The broader significance is how quickly AI website builders are moving beyond their original pitch. Prompt-based site creation is no longer particularly unusual, with competing tools increasingly focused on everything that happens after the first generation: editing, deployment, data management and collaboration.
ChatGPT Sites still won’t automatically replace conventional web development workflows, particularly for complicated products requiring extensive customization, infrastructure control or specialized engineering. But Build Together, private sharing, database inspection, faster deployment and custom domains address several practical limitations that can stop an AI-generated prototype from becoming something people actually use.
The next test is whether Sites can continue adding professional development capabilities without losing the simplicity that made prompt-built websites appealing in the first place.
