As AI-generated images increasingly flood search results, Google is stepping up to enhance transparency. The company has announced that it will soon begin labeling images created or edited with AI in Google Search, Google Lens, and Android’s Circle to Search. This labeling system aims to combat misinformation and improve user trust by clearly identifying AI-generated content.
The tech giant will leverage metadata from the Coalition for Content Provenance and Authenticity (C2PA), an industry group Google joined earlier this year, to identify AI-generated images. This metadata tracks the image’s origin, including where and when it was created, as well as the software and hardware involved in its creation.
This move comes amidst growing concerns about the misuse of AI-generated images, particularly in the context of deepfakes and online scams. By clearly labeling such content, Google hopes to help users distinguish between real and AI-generated images, contributing to a safer and more informed online environment.
The labeling initiative will also extend to Google’s advertising services, ensuring that advertisements containing AI content adhere to their policies. While there’s no word yet on when exactly these labels will appear, it’s clear that Google is taking proactive steps to address the challenges posed by AI-generated content.
