Disney+ disables Dolby Vision and HDR10+ amid European patent dispute

Disney+ has begun disabling several advanced video formats for some users in Europe, including Dolby Vision, HDR10+, and certain 3D playback options. While the change may appear sudden to subscribers, it is the result of an ongoing legal dispute rather than a technical failure or app bug.

Reports first surfaced in late 2025, primarily from users in Germany, but the scope has since widened. Viewers in France, the Netherlands, Belgium, Portugal, and Poland have now reported that content previously available in Dolby Vision or HDR10+ is falling back to standard HDR or SDR. In the case of Apple Vision Pro users, certain 3D playback formats have also been disabled. The shift has been corroborated by industry publications, including FlatPanelsHD and German outlet Heise.

The root of the issue is a patent dispute in Germany involving InterDigital, a firm that licenses video and wireless-related patents. German courts have issued an injunction affecting how certain HDR technologies can be distributed, and Disney has opted to disable affected formats rather than risk violating the ruling. While the injunction currently applies within Germany, Disney appears to be proactively limiting HDR formats across additional European markets, possibly to simplify compliance while the case remains unresolved.

Adding to the uncertainty, Disney has quietly updated its public support documentation. References to Dolby Vision have been removed from at least one official help page, including versions visible in the United States. While this does not confirm an immediate change for U.S. subscribers, it suggests that Disney is reassessing how it publicly communicates HDR support and may be preparing for broader adjustments if the legal situation escalates.

The formats impacted by the change are widely used across modern TVs and streaming devices. Dolby Vision and HDR10+ both offer scene-by-scene metadata to improve contrast and color accuracy, and their absence can be noticeable on higher-end displays. Disney has not announced any compensatory upgrades or timelines for restoration, leaving users with fewer options for premium playback quality in the affected regions.

InterDigital has previously pursued licensing disputes with other major technology companies, including Amazon and Samsung, and is often characterized by critics as aggressively enforcing patents rather than producing consumer-facing products. For now, the courts are still weighing the broader implications of the case, and it remains unclear whether Disney will reach a licensing agreement, appeal the ruling, or continue restricting features region by region.

Until the dispute is resolved, Disney+ subscribers in Europe may continue to see reduced HDR support, even on devices fully capable of handling these formats. The situation highlights how behind-the-scenes legal battles can have direct and visible effects on everyday streaming experiences, sometimes without advance notice to users.
