Call recording and transcription comes to more iPhones with iOS 18.1 beta

Apple’s latest iOS 18.1 beta is making waves, not just for its expansion to older iPhone models but also for bringing the highly anticipated call recording and transcription features to a wider range of devices.

Previously limited to the iPhone 15 Pro models and the iPhone 16 lineup, the new beta confirms these features are functional on the iPhone 14 Pro and possibly even older models like the iPhone XS. This means that users with compatible iPhones can now tap an icon during a call to initiate recording, with an automated message informing all participants. The recording, along with a transcript, is then saved in the Notes app for easy access.

While this broader availability is exciting, it’s important to note that AI-generated call summaries remain exclusive to iPhones equipped with Apple Intelligence – the iPhone 15 Pro, iPhone 15 Pro Max, and all iPhone 16 models.Additionally, the call recording feature itself is currently restricted to specific regions, though we can hope for a wider rollout in the future.

If you’re eager to try out these new features but aren’t keen on using beta software, the official release of iOS 18.1 is slated for October. Until then, this expanded beta offers a glimpse into the future of iPhone communication, where call recording and transcription might soon become standard features for a majority of users.
