Bluetooth 6 is coming, and here’s what it means for your iPhone’s future

While it feels like we’ve just gotten used to Bluetooth 5, the next generation of wireless connectivity is already upon us.The Bluetooth Special Interest Group has introduced Bluetooth 6, packing several technical advancements that will ultimately enhance the way our devices interact.

The most exciting new feature for iPhone users is Bluetooth Channel Sounding. Imagine having the ability to not only know the direction but also the precise distance of your Bluetooth devices. This could revolutionize how we find lost items through services like Find My, offering accuracy comparable to Apple’s Ultra Wideband technology.

Beyond just locating misplaced belongings, Channel Sounding also opens doors for innovative security features. Your car or smart home could unlock only when your phone is within a specific range, thwarting potential Bluetooth relay attacks.

While Channel Sounding steals the spotlight, Bluetooth 6 brings other notable improvements. These mainly target the technical side, enhancing advertising filtering, monitoring, and data transfer efficiency. These updates should translate to faster and more reliable connections in various scenarios.

As for when you can expect Bluetooth 6 on your iPhone, it’s likely we’ll see it in the iPhone 17 or, if not, definitely in the iPhone 18 in 2026. However, keep in mind that the true potential of Bluetooth 6 will unfold as more devices with this new standard hit the market.

The arrival of Bluetooth 6 signals a significant evolution in wireless technology. Get ready for a more seamless, secure, and intelligent connected experience.
