Apple has quietly acquired DarwinAI, a Canadian startup specializing in visual AI for manufacturing quality control, according to Bloomberg. While neither company has officially announced the deal, LinkedIn profiles reveal several DarwinAI team members joining Apple’s machine learning division in January.
DarwinAI’s technology goes beyond simply inspecting components. Their expertise lies in developing efficient AI models that require less processing power and memory. This focus on miniaturization aligns perfectly with Apple’s strategy of integrating advanced AI features directly onto its devices, rather than relying solely on cloud-based processing. Investors like BDC Capital and Obvious Ventures have confirmed DarwinAI’s acquisition, though they declined to comment further. Apple also did not immediately respond to requests for comment.
The acquisition of DarwinAI underscores Apple’s commitment to propelling its generative AI capabilities forward. Generative AI, which encompasses a variety of techniques for creating new content, is expected to be a major driver of innovation in the coming years. Apple has lagged behind competitors like OpenAI, Google, Meta, and Microsoft in releasing generative AI features. However, CEO Tim Cook has promised “groundbreaking” AI features to be unveiled later this year, hinting that DarwinAI’s expertise might play a key role in Apple’s upcoming announcements.
