Deezer AI music detector scans playlists across streaming services

Deezer has introduced a free online tool designed to identify AI-generated tracks within playlists across major streaming services, including Apple Music and Spotify. The French platform positions the detector as a response to the rapid rise of synthetic music, aiming to give listeners greater transparency in an era where artificial intelligence increasingly shapes audio content.

Users access the tool via Deezer’s dedicated site, select their preferred streaming service from a list of 20 options that includes Spotify, SoundCloud, and YouTube Music, and grant temporary permission for playlist import. The system then scans the content and flags potentially AI-created tracks. Deezer’s CEO, Alexis Lanternier, noted that internal data indicates nearly half of users arriving from rival platforms carry AI material in their libraries, suggesting many listeners remain unaware of its presence. Whether this tool delivers precise, actionable insights or merely surface-level percentages remains to be thoroughly tested by independent users.

This development arrives against a backdrop of growing industry concern over AI music proliferation. Deezer reports receiving more than 60,000 fully AI-generated tracks daily, with synthetic content now comprising roughly 39 percent of all music delivered to its service. Data from the company also points to high levels of fraudulent streaming activity around such tracks in 2025, reaching up to 85 percent in some cases. These figures underscore broader challenges: the ease of AI production has flooded platforms, complicating discovery for human artists and raising questions about royalties, authenticity, and listener trust.

Apple implemented a metadata system called Transparency Tags in March to indicate AI involvement in track creation. However, the voluntary nature of these labels leaves significant gaps, relying on artists and labels to self-report rather than enforcing consistent standards. Other services have been slower to adopt similar measures, leaving room for third-party efforts like Deezer’s detector. Critics might view the tool as a competitive move to draw attention and data from users of larger platforms, yet it also highlights a genuine need for better safeguards in an ecosystem where algorithmic recommendations often prioritize volume over origin.

Historically, music consumption has navigated technological shifts—from vinyl to digital downloads to streaming—with each era bringing debates over quality and creator rights. The current AI wave accelerates these tensions, potentially democratizing production while diluting the human element that defines much of the art form. Tools for detection could empower listeners seeking organic experiences, but they also risk oversimplifying complex creative processes where AI assistance ranges from minor enhancements to full generation. Privacy considerations around playlist access warrant scrutiny as well, even if framed as temporary.

For now, Deezer’s initiative offers a practical starting point for those curious about their playlists. Its effectiveness will likely evolve with feedback and refinements, contributing to ongoing conversations about preserving musical integrity amid rapid technological change. As AI tools become more sophisticated, the pressure on streaming giants to implement robust, transparent solutions will only intensify.
