Sandisk is marking Pokémon’s 30th anniversary with a pair of officially licensed storage devices built around two of the franchise’s most recognisable characters: Mew and Mewtwo. The new collection includes a Pokémon Portable SSD featuring Mewtwo and a compact USB-C flash drive themed around Mew, turning otherwise ordinary storage hardware into something aimed squarely at collectors and longtime fans.
The more capable of the two is the Sandisk Pokémon Portable SSD, Mewtwo Edition. Available in 500GB and 1TB capacities, the drive offers read speeds of up to 1,000MB/s and is designed to survive drops of up to two metres. Sandisk says it can operate up to five times faster than traditional portable hard drives, although actual performance will naturally depend on the device, connection and workload being used.
Those specifications position the Mewtwo SSD as more than Pokémon merchandise. Speeds approaching 1GB/s are useful for moving large photo libraries, video projects, game captures and other sizeable files, while the compact design makes it suited to people who regularly move data between machines. The Pokémon treatment is primarily cosmetic, with a tactile 2D Mewtwo design providing the collectible element rather than introducing any Pokémon-specific functionality.
The Sandisk Pokémon USB-C Flash Drive, Mew Edition takes the more portable and affordable-looking approach, although Sandisk has not provided regional pricing in its announcement. It offers up to 128GB of storage and works with compatible USB-C phones, tablets and computers. That makes it potentially handy for quickly shifting photos, videos and documents between devices without relying on cloud storage or an internet connection.
Its arrival also reflects how much the humble flash drive has changed. USB-C is now common across modern laptops, Android devices and newer iPhones and iPads, making a single compact drive considerably more useful across different hardware ecosystems than older USB-A models. For Pokémon fans, the Mew design adds personality to a device that would otherwise disappear into a drawer full of anonymous storage accessories.
Pokémon celebrates its 30th anniversary in 2026, three decades after the original Pokémon Red and Green games debuted in Japan in 1996. During that time, the franchise has expanded far beyond Nintendo hardware into trading cards, animation, films, mobile games and a seemingly endless catalogue of licensed products. Storage drives are hardly the strangest place Pokémon has appeared, but there is at least a practical connection here: both products can actually become part of a fan’s everyday tech setup.
The Sandisk Pokémon Portable SSD, Mewtwo Edition and Pokémon USB-C Flash Drive, Mew Edition are available from August 31. Sandisk has not detailed UAE pricing in the supplied announcement, so the biggest unanswered question for regional buyers is how much of a premium the Pokémon designs will command over comparable standard Sandisk drives.
