JBL’s new Cove speakers want to take over your entire home

JBL is making a serious play for the living room. The company best known for portable Bluetooth speakers and oversized party hardware has introduced Cove, a new family of Wi-Fi speakers designed to spread music around the home — and potentially turn an existing JBL soundbar into a larger surround setup.

The Cove range launches with three models: the Cove M1, portable Cove P1 and larger Cove X1. All three connect over Wi-Fi and can be grouped through the JBL One app, allowing listeners to place speakers in different rooms and keep audio playing as they move around the house.

That puts JBL into a familiar whole-home audio category where convenience matters almost as much as sound quality. Instead of repeatedly pairing individual Bluetooth speakers, Wi-Fi allows multiple devices to operate as a connected system. JBL says Cove speakers can move between grouped configurations without requiring users to reset the setup.

More interestingly, Cove speakers also work with JBL Bar Series MK2 soundbars and can be deployed as rear speakers. That gives buyers a modular route into home theatre: start with individual speakers for music, then repurpose or expand them into a surround setup later.

The $230 Cove M1 is the entry point. JBL positions it as the everyday model, equipping it with three tweeters, a woofer and the company’s AI Sound Boost processing. Despite the increasingly unavoidable “AI” branding appearing across consumer electronics, this is fundamentally audio processing rather than the kind of generative AI technology currently dominating the industry.

Step up to the $400 Cove P1 and portability becomes the selling point. The battery-powered speaker promises up to 14 hours of playback per charge, allowing it to move around the house without remaining tethered to an outlet. It also supports Dolby Atmos.

At the top sits the $450 Cove X1, the largest and most expensive model. It packs four tweeters and two woofers and adds Dolby Atmos support, making it the obvious choice for buyers looking for greater output from a single Cove speaker.

The strategy is a notable departure from the products most strongly associated with JBL. Bluetooth remains ideal for portable speakers because it works practically anywhere, but Wi-Fi makes considerably more sense for permanent multi-room systems where several speakers need to communicate reliably and stay synchronized.

The real appeal, though, could be Cove’s modularity. Buyers aren’t being pushed toward one enormous system from day one. Speakers can be added as needed, moved between rooms and potentially incorporated into a JBL home theatre setup later.

All three JBL Cove speakers will be offered in black or white and go on sale September 13. With prices starting at $230 and climbing quickly as rooms multiply, whole-home Cove setups won’t necessarily be cheap — but JBL is clearly betting that its next big opportunity lies beyond the Bluetooth speaker you take to the beach.
