Justin Bieber joins the FIFA World Cup final halftime show

Justin Bieber will co-headline the first-ever halftime show at the FIFA World Cup final, sharing the stage with established acts including Madonna, Shakira, BTS, Burna Boy, and Coldplay. The performance, scheduled for July 19 at New York New Jersey Stadium, aims to support the FIFA Global Citizen Education Fund and marks a departure from traditional World Cup final formats that previously lacked a dedicated halftime entertainment segment.

Chris Martin of Coldplay is curating the roughly 11-minute show, which will also incorporate the PS22 Chorus from Staten Island and Sesame Street characters like Kermit and Miss Piggy to emphasize its education-focused theme. FIFA and Global Citizen announced Bieber’s involvement on July 8, expanding a lineup first revealed in May. Proceeds from the initiative, including $1 from each tournament ticket sold, contribute to the fund, which has already raised over $50 million toward its $100 million goal of improving access to education and soccer programs for children worldwide.

Bieber described the World Cup as a unique global unifier in his statement, expressing satisfaction that participation would aid educational efforts. Burna Boy, performing “Dai Dai,” the tournament’s official song alongside Shakira, highlighted the privilege of representing Africa on this platform. The event’s scale reflects the growing commercialization of major sporting spectacles, blending music, philanthropy, and family-friendly entertainment in a manner reminiscent of the Super Bowl halftime show.

This addition has sparked mixed reactions among soccer traditionalists. Some view the American-hosted tournament’s innovations—such as sponsored hydration breaks and now a high-profile musical intermission—as further departures from the sport’s usual flow. Critics argue it prioritizes spectacle over the game itself, potentially disrupting the natural rhythm that distinguishes soccer from other major events. FIFA, however, appears intent on leveraging the final’s massive audience for broader cultural and charitable impact.

The World Cup final halftime performance represents an experiment for the organization. While opening ceremonies and pre-match events are common, inserting a structured entertainment block mid-game carries risks, including timing pressures and audience reception. Success could influence future tournaments, especially as FIFA continues expanding its global entertainment footprint. For now, the July 19 show will test whether this blend of pop, global music, and messaging resonates without overshadowing the match itself.

Musically, the diverse roster spans generations and regions, from established superstars to choral elements and puppet characters. It underscores the event’s ambition to appeal widely while advancing educational causes. Yet questions remain about execution in a high-stakes live setting and whether the charitable framing sufficiently offsets concerns over excessive commercialization in what many consider the world’s premier sporting event.
