Twitch is giving Pokémon fans another reason to keep an eye on livestream chat. The platform has partnered with The Pokémon Company International to introduce Pokémon Chat Badges, a collectible system that rewards viewers for watching eligible streams and, in some cases, subscribing to participating channels.
The first collection brings Pichu, Bulbasaur, Charmander and Squirtle into Twitch chats. Unlike the platform’s familiar event-specific badges, the Pokémon system is being positioned as an ongoing collection, with different characters rotating through over time. Once earned, badges can be displayed across Twitch rather than being limited to the channel where they were unlocked.
Pichu is the entry point and doesn’t require spending money. Viewers receive a Poké Ball after visiting a stream in an eligible category, then need to watch for 20 minutes per day across three days to reveal the Pichu badge. Those days do not have to be consecutive, with Twitch automatically recording progress.
Collecting the Kanto starters involves subscriptions. Subscribing to an eligible channel, or gifting a subscription, awards another Poké Ball containing Bulbasaur, Charmander or Squirtle. Three subscriptions guarantee all three Pokémon. That makes the feature partly a loyalty system and partly another incentive for Twitch’s subscription economy, even if the initial Pichu badge remains accessible without payment.
There is also a longer-term progression mechanic. Twitch says collected Pokémon will eventually evolve when viewers spend more time watching qualifying content. However, the system includes an element of scarcity: anyone who misses a Pokémon during its original collection period will also miss the opportunity to unlock its evolved forms later. A new Collections interface will keep track of acquired badges and Pokémon that remain available.
The eligible content pool is considerably broader than dedicated Pokémon streams. Alongside Pokémon game categories, viewers can make progress while watching Just Chatting, DJs, Sports, Music and Art. The first set of Pokémon Chat Badges will remain available until October 1, after which new Pokémon are expected to rotate into the collection.
Twitch is also tying the launch to PokémonXP and the 2026 Pokémon World Championships, running from August 28 to 30. Watching the PokémonXP channel for 60 minutes during the event will unlock a PokémonXP Costumed Pikachu badge. Another 60-minute reward, the 2026 World Championships Costumed Pikachu, will be available through official Pokémon channels. Both are limited to that weekend.
For Twitch, the idea fits neatly into the broader push to turn passive viewing into measurable participation. Drops have already trained audiences to leave streams running for digital rewards, while channel points and badges add persistent identity to chat. Pokémon Chat Badges combine those ideas with one of entertainment’s most established collecting franchises. Whether viewers embrace the subscription-linked side of the system remains to be seen, but the evolution mechanic gives Twitch a way to keep the collection running well beyond its first four Pokémon.
