Apple has officially entered the foldable smartphone era with the iPhone Duo, its first folding iPhone and arguably the biggest physical change to the device in years. Open it up and you get a 7.6-inch inner display; fold it closed and a compact 5.4-inch outer screen handles everyday iPhone duties.

The Duo also packs the A20 Pro chip, dual batteries, a custom vapor chamber, 48MP cameras and an iOS 27.1 interface redesigned around two displays. It even supports Apple Pencil, although that feature is coming later this year.

Naturally, Apple’s first foldable isn’t cheap. The iPhone Duo starts at AED 8,499, with UAE pre-orders beginning October 16 ahead of availability on October 23.

Two displays turn the iPhone into something very different

Closed, the iPhone Duo uses a 5.4-inch Super Retina XDR outer display that Apple says provides 90 percent of the screen area of an iPhone 18 Pro. Open it and the 7.6-inch inner display provides 50 percent more screen area than an iPhone 18 Pro Max.

Both displays share the same aspect ratio, allowing content to scale more naturally as the phone moves between folded and unfolded modes. They also support ProMotion, Always-On functionality and up to 3,000 nits of peak outdoor brightness.

The inner screen gets a nano-texture finish designed to reduce reflections while making the fold crease less visible. There’s also an under-display FaceTime camera, keeping the larger screen uninterrupted when the camera isn’t being used.

Touch ID replaces Face ID and is integrated into the side button, allowing authentication whether the Duo is open or closed. Apple Watch unlocking and Camera Control are supported too.

Apple has taken foldable durability seriously

Durability has always been the final boss of foldable phone design, so Apple has thrown plenty of engineering at the Duo’s hinge and flexible display.

The chassis uses grade 5 titanium with a hinge containing more than 100 components. Internal support ribs strengthen the structure, while Ceramic Shield protects the rear and Ceramic Shield 2 covers the outer display. Apple also gives the Duo an IP68 water- and dust-resistance rating.

The folding screen combines a scratch-resistant coating, nano-textured polymer cover layer, high-strength glass, flexible adhesives and a titanium reinforcement plate. Apple says the custom polymer offers up to 40 percent greater stiffness than other materials used in the industry.

None of that makes a folding display indestructible, of course. But Apple clearly understands that buyers spending AED 8,499 probably don’t want their new technological origami project developing existential problems after a few months.

Folding unlocks completely new camera tricks

The Duo features a 48MP Fusion Main camera capable of 48MP capture, a default 24MP mode and an optical-quality 2x option. It’s joined by the same 48MP Fusion Ultra Wide camera found on the iPhone 18 Pro models, including macro support.

The folding design is where things become more interesting. Users can shoot selfies with the higher-quality rear cameras while previewing themselves on the outer display, while Duo Preview lets the person being photographed see the live composition.

Smart Take uses on-device AI to detect when subjects are posing and automatically capture a photo. Kid Cue takes a slightly more adorable approach by playing Peanuts animations on the outer display to convince children to look towards the camera.

The phone can also stand partially folded for hands-free photography, video and FaceTime calls without needing a tripod. Video recording reaches 4K Dolby Vision at 120fps using the Main camera, with Cinematic effects available after capture at up to 60fps.

iOS 27.1 embraces the folding screen

Apple isn’t simply stretching regular iOS across a larger display. iOS 27.1 adapts navigation, controls, the Dock, Dynamic Island and other interface elements around the Duo’s unusual form factor.

The biggest productivity addition is Split View, which finally allows two iPhone apps to run side by side. Users can swap between apps, open two windows from the same app and save app combinations for quick access later.

Apple’s apps have been optimized for the folding interface, while third-party developers can adapt their software using updated APIs. Netflix, Zoom and Slack are among the apps already taking advantage of the design.

StandBy also works differently on Duo and doesn’t require the phone to be charging. Prop it on a surface and either display can become a clock, photo frame or widget hub, which is exactly the sort of small software trick that makes folding hardware feel useful rather than merely expensive.

A20 Pro has to power twice the display

Inside is the same 2nm A20 Pro used by the iPhone 18 Pro generation, with a six-core CPU, seven-core GPU and Dual 16-core Neural Engine.

Apple claims up to 20 percent faster CPU performance than A19 Pro, up to 40 percent faster GPU performance and twice the AI compute capability. Memory bandwidth increases by 50 percent.

Keeping a folding flagship cool is trickier than cramming a chip into a conventional slab, so Apple has developed a custom vapor chamber connected directly to A20 Pro. The company claims up to 35 percent better sustained performance than the iPhone 17 Pro.

There’s also a dedicated display engine responsible for driving both screens simultaneously and keeping transitions fluid as the phone is folded, rotated and flipped.

Dual batteries deliver up to 44 hours of video playback

Rather than fitting one oddly shaped battery around the hinge, Apple has placed a high-energy battery on each side of the Duo. Software manages both cells as a single power system.

Apple rates battery life at up to 31 hours of video playback using the inner display and up to 44 hours using the outer screen. With usage divided equally between both displays, Apple claims up to 24 hours of representative use per charge.

Wired charging can reach 50 percent in around 20 minutes with compatible equipment, while MagSafe or Qi2 wireless charging can reach 50 percent in around 30 minutes.

The Duo is also eSIM-only worldwide, allowing Apple to dedicate more internal space to the battery. Wi-Fi 7, Bluetooth 6 and Thread come through Apple’s N1 networking chip, while C2 handles cellular connectivity.

Apple Pencil support turns Duo into a tiny notebook

One of the more surprising additions is Apple Pencil support. Later this year, the iPhone Duo will work with Apple Pencil USB-C on both displays.

That 7.6-inch inner screen suddenly makes Pencil support much more logical than it would be on a conventional iPhone. Users will be able to take handwritten notes, sketch and mark up documents without carrying an iPad.

It also gives the Duo a clearer identity beyond being “the iPhone that folds.” Between Split View, Pencil support and the larger canvas, Apple is positioning it somewhere between an iPhone Pro and an extremely pocketable iPad mini.

iPhone Duo UAE price and release date

The iPhone Duo comes in star white and night sky, with prices starting at AED 8,499. UAE pre-orders begin Friday, October 16, with availability starting Friday, October 23.

Apple is also introducing a two-piece Duo Case for AED 319 and a Duo Folio with integrated kickstand for AED 529. Both support MagSafe and Qi2 charging.

That starting price makes the Duo a very different proposition from Apple’s mainstream iPhones. This is clearly an ultra-premium first-generation device aimed at enthusiasts, multitaskers and early adopters who value the folding experience enough to pay handsomely for it.
