Xiaomi to challenge Qualcomm and MediaTek with in-house smartphone chips

Xiaomi, the renowned smartphone manufacturer, is reportedly developing its own mobile processors, aiming to reduce its dependence on industry giants like Qualcomm and MediaTek. If successful, Xiaomi would join the elite ranks of Apple and Samsung as the only companies utilizing in-house silicon for their smartphones.

Xiaomi’s ambitious plan involves creating a custom 3nm chip, slated for release in early 2025. The company hopes to achieve performance comparable to Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 flagship processor. By designing its own chips, Xiaomi could potentially optimize them for its specific devices, leading to improvements in performance and efficiency.

However, the path to chip independence is fraught with challenges. Developing mobile chips is a complex and expensive undertaking. Even Samsung, with its decade-long experience in producing Exynos chips, has faced criticism regarding performance inconsistencies compared to Snapdragon counterparts.

Despite the inherent risks, Xiaomi has partnered with ARM to design its custom chips. The design phase for its first 3nm chip has reportedly been completed, with mass production expected in 2025. Xiaomi plans to collaborate with Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC) for the manufacturing process, leveraging TSMC’s advanced fabrication capabilities.

However, Xiaomi faces external pressures stemming from U.S. restrictions on Chinese companies’ access to advanced chip technologies. These restrictions, imposed by the Biden administration, could potentially hinder Xiaomi’s progress. Furthermore, the incoming Trump administration has proposed new rules that could further limit Chinese firms’ access to high-end chips.

Xiaomi’s foray into chip development is a bold strategic move. While the potential benefits are significant, the company faces formidable challenges, including technical complexities, intense competition, and geopolitical hurdles. Whether Xiaomi can successfully navigate these challenges and achieve its chip ambitions remains to be seen.
