WhatsApp adds voice message transcription for enhanced accessibility

WhatsApp has introduced a new feature that allows users to transcribe voice messages, providing a text-based version of audio messages. This functionality, similar to a feature available in Apple’s iMessage, enhances accessibility and convenience for users who may not always be able to listen to audio messages.

The voice message transcription feature has been in beta testing for over a year and is now being rolled out to WhatsApp users globally. To enable this feature, users need to update to the latest version of WhatsApp and then activate it in the app’s settings. Once enabled, transcribing a voice message is as simple as long-pressing the message and selecting the “transcribe” option.

WhatsApp emphasizes that the transcription process happens locally on the device, ensuring that the content of voice messages remains private and protected by end-to-end encryption.

The transcription feature supports a wide range of languages on iPhones, including English, Spanish, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese, Russian, Turkish, Chinese, Arabic, Hebrew, Swedish, Thai, and more. On Android devices, the initial rollout supports English, Portuguese, Spanish, and Russian, with plans to expand language support in the future.

It’s important to note that the accuracy of transcriptions may vary depending on factors such as background noise and clarity of speech in the voice message. In cases of excessive background noise, the transcription process might not be successful.

This new feature addresses a practical need for users who often receive voice messages but may be in situations where listening to audio is difficult, such as in noisy environments or when needing to maintain silence. The ability to read a text version of the message enhances communication and ensures that important information is not missed.
