Western Digital has announced the release of two groundbreaking drives: a 32TB UltraSMR HDD and a 26TB ePMR CMR HDD. These drives represent a significant leap forward in storage technology, offering unprecedented capacity for data centers, hyperscalers, and enterprises grappling with the ever-growing demands of data storage.
The rise of artificial intelligence (AI) has fueled an explosion of data. AI systems require massive datasets for training and operation, generating even more data as they process and analyze information. This “AI Data Cycle” demands storage solutions that can handle both the influx of raw data and the output of AI-generated content. Western Digital’s new high-capacity HDDs are designed to address this challenge, providing cost-effective and reliable storage for the AI era.
These new drives leverage a suite of advanced technologies to achieve their record-breaking capacities. Energy-assisted PMR (ePMR) recording technology increases storage density, while OptiNAND, ArmorCache, and a triple-stage actuator enhance performance and reliability. Notably, the drives feature an innovative 11-disk design, a first in the industry, allowing for greater storage capacity within a standard 3.5-inch form factor.
The 32TB Ultrastar DC HC690 pushes the boundaries of capacity with its UltraSMR technology. This drive is optimized for sequential write workloads, making it ideal for archival storage, content delivery, and other applications where data is written in a continuous stream. With its low power consumption and high capacity, the Ultrastar DC HC690 offers a compelling solution for cost-effective mass storage.
For applications requiring conventional magnetic recording (CMR) technology, the 26TB Ultrastar DC HC590 delivers the highest capacity available in a CMR HDD. This drive offers a seamless upgrade path for existing storage systems, providing increased capacity without requiring changes to software or hardware configurations.
To further enhance the capabilities of these new drives, Western Digital is integrating them into its Ultrastar Data60 and Data102 hybrid storage platforms. These platforms provide high-density, scalable storage solutions for modern data centers and cloud environments. With support for up to 60 or 102 HDDs, these platforms can deliver over 3 petabytes of raw storage capacity in a single unit.
Western Digital is also bringing its high-capacity technology to the channel market with the release of 26TB WD Gold SATA HDDs. These drives are designed for small and medium businesses, system integrators, and resellers, providing reliable, high-performance storage for demanding workloads.
With the launch of these new HDDs, Western Digital solidifies its position as a leader in storage innovation. These drives not only address the immediate needs of data-intensive applications but also pave the way for future advancements in storage technology. As data continues to grow exponentially, Western Digital’s commitment to pushing the boundaries of HDD capacity ensures that businesses and individuals will have the tools they need to store, manage, and access their data efficiently and reliably.
