OpenAI CEO Sam Altman believes the United Arab Emirates could play a leading role in shaping the future of artificial intelligence (AI). During a virtual appearance at the World Governments Summit, Altman suggested the UAE act as a “regulatory sandbox” for testing and experimenting with AI technologies before establishing global limitations on their use.
Altman, whose popular ChatGPT thrust large language models (LLMs) into the spotlight, believes global coordination is essential to manage future advancements in AI. He identified the UAE as a potential leader in these discussions, citing its investments and policy focus on AI development. This proposal comes as Altman seeks investors in the Middle East for his AI semiconductor initiative.
Beyond the “regulatory sandbox” proposal, Altman revealed OpenAI’s plan to open-source additional LLMs, though specific models are yet to be selected. He also mentioned developing tools to assist less developed nations that may struggle to afford their own AI development.
