Tap to Pay on iPhone launches in the UAE, transforming iPhones into payment terminals

Apple has introduced its innovative Tap to Pay technology to businesses in the United Arab Emirates, enabling them to accept contactless payments directly on their iPhones. This feature eliminates the need for traditional card readers or payment terminals, offering a streamlined and secure payment solution for merchants of all sizes.

With Tap to Pay on iPhone, businesses can transform their compatible iPhones (iPhone XS or later running the latest iOS) into contactless payment terminals. This means merchants can accept payments from a variety of sources, including contactless credit and debit cards, Apple Pay, and other digital wallets, using just their iPhone and a partner-enabled iOS app.

The payment process is remarkably simple: at checkout, the merchant prompts the customer to hold their contactless card or digital wallet near the merchant’s iPhone. The payment is then securely completed using NFC technology. This seamless experience eliminates the need for additional hardware, empowering businesses to accept payments from any location, be it a storefront, a pop-up shop, or even during home deliveries.

To bring Tap to Pay to the UAE, Apple has collaborated with leading payment platforms and app developers in the region. Adyen, Magnati, and Network International are among the first payment platforms to integrate Tap to Pay on iPhone into their iOS apps, allowing their merchant clients to easily enable this convenient payment method. The technology supports contactless credit and debit cards from major payment networks, including American Express, Mastercard, and Visa.

Apple has prioritized privacy in the design and development of Tap to Pay on iPhone. Customer payment data is protected by the same robust technology that safeguards Apple Pay transactions. All transactions processed through Tap to Pay are encrypted and processed using the Secure Element, a dedicated hardware component within the iPhone. This ensures that Apple does not have access to sensitive information, such as the customer’s card details or purchase history.

The launch of Tap to Pay on iPhone in the UAE marks a significant step towards a more flexible and accessible payment ecosystem. By empowering businesses with this technology, Apple is contributing to the growth of digital payments and enhancing the overall customer experience.
