About the Song appears in the app’s Now Playing view and is currently labeled as a beta feature. When available for a given track, users can scroll down to find a card that opens into a series of swipeable summaries. These cards pull together information from third-party sources across the internet, such as Wikipedia, music publications, and fan-maintained sites. Spotify has acknowledged that machine learning systems are involved in generating at least some of these summaries, placing the feature within the company’s expanding use of automated content tools.
In practice, the cards vary in depth and number. Some songs surface a single summary, while others include several cards that draw from one or multiple sources. In testing, certain tracks displayed up to four cards, each highlighting a different aspect of the song’s background or reception. Access to About the Song is limited. At launch, it is available only to Spotify Premium subscribers and only for English-language accounts in the United States, United Kingdom, Canada, Ireland, Australia, and New Zealand. Even within those regions, not every song supports the feature, which suggests that coverage will expand gradually rather than appearing across the full catalog all at once.
Each card includes simple thumbs-up and thumbs-down controls, allowing listeners to rate the usefulness of the summaries. While Spotify has not detailed how this feedback is used, the presence of rating controls implies an ongoing effort to refine the quality and accuracy of the AI-assisted content. As with similar features across tech platforms, the reliance on aggregated third-party sources raises questions about consistency, attribution, and how nuanced artistic interpretations are distilled into short, standardized formats.
The rollout of About the Song follows several other recent updates from Spotify. Over the past week, the company announced plans to sell physical books tied to its audiobook offerings and updated its lyrics feature to support offline access.
