Sony’s PlayStation division joins the grim parade of tech layoffs, and has announced a significant workforce reduction, affecting approximately 8% of its employees, translating to around 900 jobs. This move impacts its global operations, including several key PlayStation Studios. Notably, US-based studios such as Naughty Dog and Insomniac Games, renowned for their development of The Last of Us and Marvel’s Spider-Man, are among those facing job cuts. The layoffs extend to other studios, including Santa Monica Studio and Guerrilla Games, highlighting the widespread nature of this decision.
The layoffs come after a thorough review of ongoing projects at various stages of development, leading to the conclusion that some would not proceed. This decision also affects international studios, with Dutch developer Guerrilla Games and UK-based London Studio and Firesprite facing potential job cuts. Hermen Hulst, head of PlayStation Studios, cited the necessity of these layoffs for the long-term sustainability of the company and its commitment to delivering superior experiences to the community.
Despite the unfortunate news, PlayStation has recognized the contributions of the affected employees, ensuring they receive severance benefits. Additionally, a career support program will be offered to those in Japan. This wave of layoffs is part of a larger trend within the tech and gaming industries, with other giants like Microsoft and Unity also reducing their workforce earlier this year.
